Join our team: BSO Summer Camp Lead (Kent International Jamboree)

October 5, 2024

The Camp Lead and Deputy Lead are volunteers tasked with leading BSO's 2025 summer camp at Kent International Jamboree. The contingent size is determined by a careful evaluation of multiple factors, such as the availability of skilled volunteers, the presence of suitable equipment, and the ability to maintain a manageable and safe contingent size. We recognise that bigger isn't always better and a smaller camp can lead to safer, more enriching, and more meaningful experiences for our young people.

What do the Camp Leads do?

Both of them fulfil a multifaceted role throughout the camp, encompassing various crucial responsibilities:

  1. Guidance and Mentorship: Serving as a mentor and role model, the Camp Leads assists adult leaders in achieving the expectations of their own role.
  2. Safety and Safeguarding: The Camp Leads bears the responsibility of ensuring the implementation and adherence to safety and safeguarding processes by all adults. This is essential for safeguarding the well-being of both young people and the adult team.
  3. Team Building: As the adult team may be working together for the first time, the Camp Leads possesses the skills to unite them, fostering connections and promoting effective communication.
  4. Camp Welfare and Wellbeing: Ensuring that adults effectively fulfil their assigned roles, including looking after the well-being of their assigned patrol and adequately supervising young people during cooking and cleaning duties.
  5. Performance management: The Camp Leads should be prepared to engage in conversation with any adults who may not be meeting expectations. They must identify and assist in resolving challenges individuals may be facing.

Overall Leadership of the Camp:

  1. Young People Experience: Under the Camp Leads’ overall lead, young people will acquire new skills, embrace challenges, and develop resilience.
  2. Youth Shaped: Ensure the overall planning for the camp is shaped by young people and seek feedback from young people before, during and after the camp to improve the current and future camping experience.
  3. Cultural Awareness: The Camp Leads promotes cultural understanding through whole-camp interaction with members from other camps with diverse backgrounds.
  4. Inspiration and Fun: Their enthusiasm creates an enjoyable and memorable Jamboree experience for everyone

In summary, the Camp Leads wears two hats, managing the adult team's functions while also ensuring that the overall camp experience is enriching for our young people. This comprehensive approach to leadership ensures a cohesive, safe, and supportive environment for everyone involved in the Jamboree. The role also offers lots of personal and professional development and networking opportunities. The role can also be an absolute blast filled with fun, adventure, friendships, and unforgettable moments. Get ready to have the time of your life!

Could the World Scout Jamboree Be for You? The World Scout Jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, with tens of thousands of Scouts from all over the world. It’s about making new friends, trying new things, learning about different cultures, and discovering what you’re capable of. But it’s also a big commitment. It takes time, energy, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. This experience isn’t right for everyone, and that’s okay. There are lots of other amazing opportunities in Scouting, too. This description is here to help you decide if applying for the Jamboree is something you’d enjoy and grow from. What Kind of Young People Are We Looking For? There’s no such thing as a “perfect” Jamboree participant. We’re not looking for the loudest, the most confident, or the most experienced. We’re looking for a mix of people who are ready to: Be part of a team – listen, support others, and work together Try new things – even if they feel a bit scary at first Be open-minded – meet people from different backgrounds and cultures Get stuck in – whether it’s cooking dinner, putting up tents, or joining in activities Grow – learn about yourself, challenge yourself, and come back with stories to tell You don’t need to have done anything like this before. You just need to be up for the journey and be born between 30 July 2009 and 30 July 2013. What You’ll Be Expected to Do If you’re selected, you’ll be part of a Unit with other young people from your area. You’ll: Take part in training weekends and team-building activities Help fundraise for your place and support others in doing the same Represent your community and the UK at an international event Be ready to learn, laugh, and maybe even get a bit muddy! Still Not Sure? That’s okay. Talk to your leaders, your family, or someone who’s been to a Jamboree before. Ask questions. Think about what excites you and what worries you. This might be the right adventure for you, or it might not be. Either way, there’s something in Scouting for everyone.
