Our Trustee Board
Our Trustee Board is made of up to 12 members, this includes the Chair, Treasurer, Area Lead Volunteer, and Area Youth Lead. The Trustee Board meets between 4-6 times a year, and helps ensure that everything is running safely, legally and that Scouting across BSO has the resources it needs to operate well, now and in the future.
What Trustees do?
At the heart of their role is a focus on strategy, performance, and assurance. Maintaining the provision of the support and services we offer to help our volunteers across British Scouting Overseas deliver fantastic programmes that give young people skills for life. There are ten key areas that our Board of Trustees are responsible for managing and supporting:
- Following charity law and the policies and rules of the Scouts
- Working in partnership with the wider BSO team to meet our charity aims
- Insurance for people, property and equipment
- Managing BSO funds and diversifying funding stream
- Volunteer recruitment, inclusive organisational growth, administration, and volunteer support services
- Safe scouting
- Managing charity risks
- Involving young people in decision making
- Complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements
- Acting as a responsible employer in line with relevant legislation and Scout values.
BSO Treasurer
The Treasurer will provide sound financial administration, support and information to the Trustee Board and Area in accordance with the Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association.
Key Tasks
The Treasurer has some specific responsibilities, these include
- To oversee expense claims being receipted, verified and authorised in line with BSO’s financial regulations
- Lead the Area Trustee Board in the creation of annual budgets, financial planning and monitoring
- Ensure that all financial reports, annual statements of account and supporting documents are maintained accurately and in accordance with legal regulations
- Ensure that the Area is financially able to function, has appropriate reserves together with maintaining accounting procedures and controls in place
- Prepare the Annual Statement of Accounts for independent examination and approval by the Area Trustee Board
- Administer the process of Independent Examination of the Annual Statement of Accounts in accordance with Policy, Organisation and Rules.
- Chair any finance working groups and the Area finance sub-Committee
- Coordinate the collection of the annual UKHQ and Area membership fees
