Natter with Nathan - November 2019

Nov 09, 2019

As your new Area Commissioner, I would firstly like to thank all those who sent kind words of support when my appointment was announced. In recent years I have been very active organising BSO’s yearly summer camp and making sure we’ve had the equipment to undertake some amazing adventures. Some of you will have met me at these events (Poacher 2017, Chamboree 2018 and Haarlem Jamborette 2019). If you haven’t attended one of our yearly events, please try to make the effort – You will meet so many other wonderful people and I promise you will have a most amazing time (see Wings 2020). I think it’s important to meet as many of you as possible, so I will do my best to attend future yearly camps, District Camps and District/Group activities even if distance means it’s only virtually, so please feel free to invite me if you’ve got something going on and you have internet connectivity and a webcam.

I’m super excited about the new role and those who know me know how enthusiastic and passionate I am about Scouting. I want to see our BSO Districts Grow, every part of BSO being fully inclusive, our youth members shaping their own programmes, achieving the top awards and gaining skills for life. And last but not least, I want us to demonstrate real and valuable Community Impact in our global communities. I can’t do this alone and I’m lucky to have the support of a brilliant Area team along with your District Commissioners and their teams who will support you to deliver all this and more. Over recent years, we’ve deliberately kept the core Area team quite small but to achieve the above aims, we may bring some more people into key roles to lead the larger strategies. If you’re interested in one of these roles, please keep an eye out for future vacancies on the Facebook page.

My most important message to you is to say a big ‘thank you’ to each and every one of you, for your commitment and contribution to Scouting, whatever the role that you do – Scouting could not exist without you. Please continue to support each other in providing great experiences for both our young people and adult volunteers alike.

I look forward to hopefully meeting you in the near future. In the meantime, should you need anything, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

British Scouting Overseas ( BSO) wants to appoint four new trustees, to serve for an initial term of three years, starting in September 2024. Our trustee board provides collective leadership and oversight of the charity, and supports our volunteers, who deliver our programme to young people around the world. At the same time, we shall be confirming the appointments of our Area Chair and Area Treasurer.

Having had the pleasure of meeting Sue and her son Sami during their family holiday in Muscat in 2015, just before taking him and other BSO YP to the 2015 World Scout Jamboree, adds a special personal touch to my heartfelt welcome to Sue Azam-Ali as she steps into her new role as District Lead Volunteer for the Rest of the World District.

I'm delighted to welcome Reuben to Team BSO. Reuben will be taking over leading the Young Leader's scheme for BSO from Victoria Mitchell. I'm greatly looking forward to how we can build on the strong foundations Victoria has put in place and support more young people in developing leadership skills and skills for life as well as working towards their Young Leader awards.
